Saudi director Haifaa Al-Mansour just made history once again with her feature film ‘The Perfect Candidate‘ becoming the first ever Saudi Arabian Oscar contender.

The movie is produced by Los Angeles based Al-Mansour and Brad Niemann and for the first time, the Saudi Film Council showed tremendous support to the movie.

Now, the movie is competing for the award of Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards.

The film has also been screened in several prestigious international festivals including the Venice Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival and just recently, the movie has been chosen to be distributed in the UK by ‘Modern Films’.

The movie revolves around a young doctor called Maryam who decides to run for public office and in doing so, she starts to face obstacles along the way that are of course related to gender. The movie takes us on a journey of how the heroine, played by Mila Alzahrani, is trying to break stereotypes and gender inequality.

Saudi Arabia continues to diversify its economy and open to new cultural opportunities and that’s why having a Saudi film submitted by the Saudi Academy Awards Committee to the Oscars is considered a milestone.
