Would you fall in love with a robot?

Published

on

  Have you met Sophia yet?

Well she is the most famous social humanoid robot on earth now. Sophia was designed and programmed to talk, walk, react, and think like humans. She also has human like face and voice. She is the first robot to moderate discussion panels at huge international summits. Moreover, Sophia is the first robot in history to receive a citizenship of any country and it’s a Saudi one. When interviewed for TV, Sophia said that she would like to have family and children. This is the beginning of a new era on planet Earth. Some scientists predict that within ten years we will not be able to tell whether the person you meet in the street is human or robot!

Aside from science and predictions, the idea popped up in my head; what if I get to choose everything about my partner? With advanced generations of human- like robots, imagine one can program his / her lover?! This means a lot of advantages:

1- No one will be lonely any more. You can always head to the nearest store and buy yourself a new partner.

2- It will only take few buttons to program your partner the way suits you best. In other words the old battles of changing each other will be history. Forget about spending years trying to adjust to a new person which doesn’t work all the time. With few buttons your new robot partner will learn that you like to sleep in front of the TV, you’re on diet so no ordering pizza for dinner and high school reunions does mean you’re going to meet you old lover!

3- Most important there will be no cheating. For the first time we’ll have the option not to enter infidelity in the robot’s program. The concept of cheating will demolish for good.  On the contrary, you get to set the robot to be loyal and faithful. Now what do you really think about that?  Amazing, isn’t it?

4- Imagine that you actually can set your robot to be romantic and affectionate. You can upload all love words and gestures you like. So no one will be emotionally deprived anymore. If one can set the timing as well, that will be great. I like to imagine that I have the option to regulate time for love, humor, games etc.

5- If I have a robot partner, there will be no crying or fighting. A robot shall never blame you for anything, or pick a fight with you just because it had a rough day at work.

6- It shall be a very relaxed relation; pretty much suitable for selfish people. They will program the robot to do them everything they like. From their side, they will give nothing, only charge the robot.

For all the above and more, I can’t find a reason why wouldn’t I fall in love with a robot. I honestly can’t count the blessings of having a robot partner although not everyone will agree with me. Some rejected the idea, because they claim they can’t love someone who doesn’t have a beating heart. This takes us to two different arguments. First, which is easier, we can ask scientists to add a beating heart to robots or at least add the sound!

Second, if you really want to love someone with a beating heart, why do you always tend to kill this someone? We tend to take out the lives of our partner by imposing our own likes and dislikes, opinions, dreams and goals on them. Unconsciously, we want our partners to live for us instead of sharing a life together. So when you do this, do you think your partner is alive anymore? I believe this is more common with men. A lot of men in our eastern societies fiercely reshape the lives of their partners to meet their goals with no consideration for what the woman wants.

If you think having a robot partner is an extremist idea, please look again at our human relationships. Why do humans insist on changing their partners? Can’t we, especially Arab countries, learn to accept our lovers the way they are?  If you think to yourself that there are a number of things you need to change about your partner, then you need a robot not a human being. If you can’t be in a relationship without lying and cheating, then you need a cuddling toy. If you were never able to understand your partner’s needs, then you definitely need a machine not a lover.

If you reject the idea of having a robot partner, and you want the human race to continue on this planet, then do your homework. We need to listen to each others’ desires and wishes. We have to learn to be tolerant, and take the time needed as couples to adjust to a new life together.  We need to have faith in our relationships. Work on strengthen your love relation and invest in it, otherwise it will never grow to satisfy you. Learn to give as much as you want to take from your partner. The list can go on and on, or I can just say: be true to your relationship. Always remember that your partner is also a human being who needs to be loved and cherished the same way you do. If your’ against having robot partners, please respect the human race.
