Riyadh Green Program

The first phase of the world’s most ambitions urban forestation projects the ‘Riyadh Green Program’ has been launched, the phase that included planting around 31,000 trees along the 144 km of main roads in the Capital city.

The main roads that the project will cover are King Salman Road, King Khaled Road, King Fahd Road, Airport Road, Makkah Road, Northern Ring Road and the Eastern Ring Road.

This project is one of the four major projects that are planned for the city and that were announced by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman last year at the initiative of Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman.

Moreover, 100,000 shrubs will also be planted which will bring the total number of green areas on these roads to about 1.4 million sq. meters.

The ‘Riyadh Green Program’ is also planning on establishing 48 major parks in the capital and 3,250 parks within residential neighborhoods.

Also worth mentioning is that around 7.5 million trees will be planted as part of this great initiative, covering areas across the capital such as gardens and parks, mosques, schools, academic, healthcare, public facilities and most roads, streets, car parking spaces and valleys.

With forestation comes the need for irrigation water and in order to secure the required amount without wasting too much water, new irrigation networks will be established to use recycled water, usually being wasted in the valleys.

We can’t wait to see Riyadh bloom in greenery!

“Our project should not jeopardize what humanity and time have consecrated,” emphasizes Nouvel, “Our project is celebrating the Nabateans spirit without caricaturing it. This creation genuinely becomes a cultural act.

Amr AlMadani, CEO of RCU, said: “These concepts, which showcase Jean Nouvel’s masterly innovation in architecture, underscore our commitment to developing AlUla as a global tourism destination without compromising the history, heritage, and landscape of AlUla. We are a destination built by artists. Sharaan by Jean Nouvel will build on that legacy to become a timeless landscape-architecture that will last forever – a gift to the world.”
