The Work of Saudi Director Haifaa Al-Mansour Praised at Venice Film Festival

Published

Saudi director Haifaa Al-Mansour has walked the red carpet of Venice Film Festival for her latest film ‘A perfect Candidate‘, making her one of just two female directors to have their films screened at the prestigious film festival.

In 2003, Al-Mansour made history when her film Wadjda was the only film submitted to the Academy Awards from the Kingdom, and so this year’s participation in Venice Film Festival is considered to be yet another barrier that she was able to cross over.

The movie revolves around a young doctor called Maryam who decides to run for public office and in doing so, she starts to face obstacles along the way that are of course related to gender. The movie takes us on a journey of how the heroine, played by Mila Alzahrani, is trying to break stereotypes and gender inequality.

Al-Mansour was joined on the red carpet by Alzahrani and Dhay, who plays the character of Selma. The Saudi director received an outstanding praise and ovation during the premiere of her film, seeing that it is the only Arab film nominated at the festival.
