Saudi Female Directors Sending Messages During Venice Film Festival

Published

on

Female Saudi directors at the Venice Film Festival have been sending messages along with their movies that women must be heard and seen.

Mansour’s movie “The Perfect Candidate” is among those films and is competing for the festival’s Golden Lion award, the movie revolves around a young doctor called Maryam who decides to run for public office and in doing so, she starts to face obstacles along the way that are of course related to gender. The movie takes us on a journey of how the heroine, played by Mila Alzahrani, is trying to break stereotypes and gender inequality.

While Ameen’s film “Scales‘ revolves around a young girl trying to survive in a village where her existence is viewed as a curse by superstitious villagers.

Both directors hope to deliver a message through their films and send empowering messages at a time where the Kingdom is already easing male guardianship rules and is showing gender equality.

“Showing a lead female character, it is indirectly empowering women,” Mansour said.

“The one who will make most money in this film is the girl, she is not a supporting role, she is the main role. You invest in her journey, love her and root for her that is what is very important for a conservative audience to see.”

The start of Mansour’s film already reflects the reforms in Saudi Arabia, by showing Maryam driving her car to work.
