Nadine Labaki Reveals Details about a ‘Capernaum’ Documentary

Published

on

Cannes’ Un Certain Regard jury president Nadine Labaki revealed during a discussion at Kering’s Women in Motion event, that her next project is a documentary about the making of her Cannes Jury Prize-winning picture Capernaum. she also admitted that she wouldn’t turn down the chance to direct a Hollywood superhero film.

In China, the movie is currently hitting a phenomenal rate, where it is still third at the box office after two weeks in theaters, and hit a gross of over the $44 million.

Labaki explains that if her own life didn’t mirror at the time the story she was telling, the movie wouldn’t have been so perfect.

“I don’t think I would have done the same film if I was not at that moment in my life a mother breastfeeding a child exactly the same age,” she said. “It’s good to have a woman’s experience in a film, a woman’s perspective on things.”

It’s impossible to deny the long process of the making of Capernaum, seeing how the team spent three years researching, and filmed for six months then spent more time editing, which all made it an epic five year journey!

“During the shooting process, fiction became reality. Lots of crazy things happened on the shoot with each one of the actors, the whole process was so interesting and so intense that we’re making a documentary about the whole thing, following the characters’ stories and what’s going on in their lives right now.” Labaki explained.

Labaki says that even though Capernaum has opened up discussions and debates around the issues that the movie provoked, there is still a long way towards doing an actual effective change -on a policy level- the thing that she hopes to accomplish, before moving on to a new project.

“We’re exploring how we can really make a change with a film,” she explained.

Labaki also saw success at the Arab Cinema Centre Critics Awards on Saturday, which runs parallel to Cannes Film Festival, celebrating films with Arab production companies.

She won Best Director for her 2018 triumph, whilst Talal Derki’s Oscar-nominated picture Of Fathers and Sons picked up Best Documentary.
